Do you want to make a difference in this world?
When is the last time you were told, “That’s Impossible!”?
Most children from an early age dream of making a big impact in this world. They imagine things most people consider impossible.
I am one of the blessed in this world. From my earliest memories, my father frequently repeated the following poem to all of his children again and again.
“It Couldn’t Be Done” by Edgar Albert Guest
Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it!
Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
At least no one ever has done it;”
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
That couldn’t be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.
In Matthew 19:26 Jesus is quoted saying “with God all things are possible.”
Without quibbling about what is and what is not possible for someone to accomplish, I suggest, and believe most will agree, each of us can accomplish much more than we do.
Rarely does someone accomplish something unless they believe they are capable. Thus, it is reasonable to conclude we seldom (perhaps never) accomplish more than we believe is possible.
Return to your childhood. Live in the joy of discovery. Live in the present. Dream big. Believe in the Impossible!
And pay attention to the qualifier in Matthew 19, “with God.” In other words, what can be accomplished is much more limited when we live in our own power and abilities.
So, if you are interested in having more influence and accomplishing more in life, be sure God is in it.
This certainly is a Christian Advantage. When we live humbly before God in everything we do, as we include God in our every decision, as we trust in God beyond our imagination, we will experience more joy, peace, and clarity of action. And we will be part of God accomplishing the Impossible in our lives and those around us.
And what we are a part of in this life will be greater than anything this world can offer.
