What areas of life need a firm Foundation?
Foremost in most people’s minds would be construction projects: homes, apartments, roadways, bridges, commercial establishments, malls, sports arenas… On and on the list goes.
Next perhaps are subjects to learn. Math for example. You need to understand what numbers are before you learn to arrange them for counting, before using them to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Then you can learn algebra, calculus, engineering, and finally how to use what you have learned in various careers.
Similarly, the alphabet is the Foundation for words, making it easier to be taught vocabulary, phonetics, spelling, and grammar, to enhance one’s ability to read and write. As these skills are developed, a person is better prepared to learn and communicate with others.
Math is a much more linear process for Foundational teaching; while reading and writing can take different paths.
When it comes to matters of faith, especially Christian faith, what is the Foundation to learn about the One True and Living God?
When you are addressing serious issues in our western world today, where should you begin?
Have you ever considered the Foundational thinking of an individual is more important than the details and outcomes of any issue?
Take abortion for example. Discussing how abortion creates problems for society (or an individual) has little concern to an individual whose worldview is based on evolution. At the core of evolution is a world where every lifeform lives for what benefits them the most. Mankind is simply another progression in the development of a world based on chance. There are no moral constraints. There is no God. Conversations tend to be more emotional than logical, since life is focused on oneself.
Plus, interconnected issues get in the way. When does life begin? How do you determine if it is right or wrong to abort a baby? Do the courts decide? The laws of the land? What is best for the child? The mother? Should the father be involved in the decision?
For those who are older, we have seen a multiplication of issues creating division in society.
I believe this is the result of the majority of people in America now relying on a worldview based on evolution instead of the Word of God.
One of the Foundational objectives of the Christian faith is to give glory to the One True and Living God for all of eternity, and to live according to the commandments of God.
When we focus on solving an individual issue in society (like abortion) it is difficult to connect the issue to the Foundation of the Christian faith.
This is much like a physician solving the problem of diabetics with pharmaceuticals instead of lifestyle adjustments. Health and wellness will never be secured by treating symptoms instead of the Foundational issue(s) of the problem.
Let us remember to address Foundational beliefs before addressing any issue in society. Especially as Christians, we understand all the things of this world will one day pass away.
Unless we (as builders) build on a firm Foundation, we labor in vain.
