Volkswagen was a respected supplier of vehicles to Americans for decades. Selling over 10 million vehicles worldwide in 2014, with profits exceeding $12 billion (a 19.6% increase over 2013), their creditability was perhaps at an all-time high.

In September 2015, Michael Horn, the CEO and president of Volkswagen Group of America, acknowledged to their North American customers, employees, dealers and the public, the company broke trust as a result of a scandal where the company intentionally circumvented pollution-monitoring devices on several diesel vehicles.
