A riot is rebellion by common people to bring attention to a cause they have become passionate about, normally related to what they believe to be a repressive government or society taking advantage of them. Ultimately it is a battle for control in a particular area of society.
Wikipedia’s list of riots begins with a riot around 205-186 BC during the great revolt in Egypt against Ptolemy V Epiphanes. It concludes with 19 riots in 2024 in response to political differences, senseless murders, and sports competition results. Only 28 riots are recorded before 1700. Thirty riots are recorded in the 1700s, 78 in the 1800s, 343 in the 1900s, and over 600 since the turn of the century.
