Forgiveness – Lesson for Group Study

Forgiveness unsettles our sense of justice. We fear Forgiveness will collapse our control, give license to evil and absolve the wicked and unrepentant from consequences. We worry that Forgiveness will leave us powerless and open to additional abuse. Too many equate Forgiveness with giving another the ability to injure us without retribution, accepting hurt time and again, making us look foolish,
and giving permission to others to malign us repeatedly. But this is only our pride talking in our arrogance to play god. God is in control. He has commanded us, through His Son, Jesus Christ, to love one another. Not because they treat us with kindness or respect. Not because they are perfect.  But simply because they are part of His creation.

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.”Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil
with good. – Romans 12:19-21 (ESV)
